Today, we're going to discuss one of the most fundamental aspects of using the program: creating and processing a tax return with Crosslink 1040. Specifically, we're going to learn how to add a new tax return and discuss important areas found within a tax return. We'll also learn how to complete the client data worksheet, add federal and state forms, and select the refund disbursement method. After that, we'll see how to verify for tax errors, print and/or archive the return, and capture signatures. Additionally, I'll discuss how to queue and transmit the tax return, and explain the difference between these two functions. Finally, we'll finish up with a few helpful tools to keep in mind when preparing tax returns. This includes tools to add notes, check the current status of a tax return, register payments, and much more. As you can see, we have lots to cover today, so let's get right to it. To begin, open up the program. The work in progress summary page is the main page of Crosslink 1040. To add a new tax return, click on the "Add New" button on the toolbar. The first thing the program will ask for is the taxpayer's social security number (SSN). If the taxpayer doesn't have an SSN and would like to apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), click on the "W7" button. This will create a return with all nines in the SSN field, but when printed, it will appear blank. If the spouse or dependents also need to apply for an ITIN, you can start their SSN with five nines and enter random numbers for the rest. These returns will also appear blank when printed.
